I'm a huge admirer of Path, the social network that's designed for a small circle of friends.
Established in 2010, it's been through a couple of versions and loads of bad press.
First it lets you have 50 connections, but that just seemed to confuse everyone. That number has now grown to 150 but the premise is the same - it's for close friends, and you can only share a thought, picture, or location. There will never be advertising.
